Health Working Environment (HWE) is a nonprofit non-profit, non-partisan and non-religious organization. It was registered on 21st of August 2019 to operate as Non-Governmental Organizations under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act No 24 of 2002 as amended by Act No. 3 of 2019 of Tanzania. Healthy Working Environment was founded with Occupational Hygienists and Occupational Physicians who have extensive experience in working to improve large and small-scale mining in Tanzania and throughout Africa. The organization brings extensive experience of working on environmental health and safety programmes with both large and small-scale mining in Tanzania
Winner of Leslie Nickels International Health & Safety Award from American Public Health Association (APHA)
On October 27, 2021 Manti Michael Nota, Executive Director of Health Working Environment (HWE), received the Leslie Nickels International Health & Safety Award from the American Public Health Association (APHA). The award is named for Leslie Nickels (1953-2017), who used her training as an educator and industrial hygienist to advance social justice for disenfranchised workers. It recognizes individuals and organizations with outstanding achievement in the field of OHS outside the United States
WHY HWE?
The Organization is dedicated:-
- To improve knowledge of occupational and environmental disease determinants and to develop innovative measures to reduce exposures to prevent disease.

- To train and educate government, businesses, workers, and the community about job-related hazards and other environmental risk factors, and provide advice on legal and regulatory efforts to improve environmental health and safety among workers and the public.
- To improve the health and safety of workers and the surrounding community, and prevent and control infectious disease in the workplace.
- To provide information and documentation of possible harmful conditions in the workplace or environment and to disseminate this guidance through training, publications and media.
- To collaborate with organizations, governments, bodies, businesses, and individuals whether national or international, to build capacity and advocate to reach mutual goals.
MISSION
To minimize environmental exposures and occupational risk factors contributing to morbidity and mortality by monitoring, researching, assessing and mitigating such factors to improve workplace conditions and public health, to prevent disease and reduce environmental pollution.
